Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has a local
office in the village of Queen Charlotte and a field office in Masset. DFO
Community Advisor, Pat Fairweather, is a regular partner in Marine
Matters community events. The Oceans Branch of the Regional
DFO office in Prince Rupert has partnered in the Marine
Matters Oceans
Education Program, providing funding to help deliver the
curriculum to Islands elementary schools. Fisheries management and
habitat protection activities are the responsibility of both the local
and regional offices.
Fisheries research and inventory work around Haida
Gwaii is conducted through the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo,
the regional office in Prince Rupert and the local offices on Haida
Gwaii. Regular biological surveys are conducted for fisheries stock
assessment, salmon escapement, herring spawn, commercial fishery
monitoring, abalone stock recovery and other research. Some of this
work is conducted in partnership with the Haida Fisheries Program and
commercial fishing associations.
WWF-Canada, Haida Fisheries, Gwaii Haanas and DFO
researchers at the Pacific Biological Station are working
collaboratively to compile information for the pilot phase of the Groundfish Atlas.
