Marine Matters booths graced
many community events in 2003. Fun activities to test knowledge of
marine creatures, crafts for young ones, posters, information and
publications were brought to the Islands communities. Thanks to
Fisheries and Oceans Canada, we were also able to bring in a
‘giant fish’ tent for marine storytelling and fun!
For Oceans Day, we hosted intertidal and dock walks in Masset, Tlell,
Queen Charlotte City and Sandspit - followed by fun and informative
ocean activities for families.
This year, Intertidal Explorations
day camps were funded through the Gwaii Trust Society and World
Wildlife Fund Canada. In each of 3 communities - Tlell, Masset
& Queen Charlotte City - young people came out to discover what
lives in their front yards, and learn about ocean life and stewardship
through hands-on activities and crafts.
Cliff Robinson, a marine researcher from Parks
Canada Western Canada Service Centre in Vancouver, was our only speaker
this year. He spoke to Islanders about Parks Canada and its National
Marine Conservation Areas mandate.
