Marine Matters exists to
nurture community thinking, living, learning and activism, to take care
of the environments that sustain us. It is an umbrella name,
encompassing people and organizations who care deeply about the waters
around Haida Gwaii. Each one of us can take
action to ensure the well-being of the sea and land around us, and
therefore our communities, for perpetuity.
Marine Matters work on Haida
Gwaii is accomplished through the collaboration of many individuals
and organizations; marine biologist Lynn Lee, educator Josina Davis,
writer & cartoonist Berry Wijdeven, biologist &
educator Jody
Bissett, Gowgaia Institute, Haida Fisheries Program, the local offices
of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and
Haida Heritage Site and the many Islander whose lives are interwoven
with the sea.
Local artists Kiki van der Heiden, Robert Vogstad
and Lynn Lee generously contributed their artwork to promote Marine
Matters through use of their designs on T-shirts,
advertising and this website. Use of photographic images of the wacky
and wonderful marine life in our frontyard for the website and other Marine Matters
publications is courtesy of the Royal BC Museum, Bart
DeFreitas, Lynn Lee and Rick Harbo. Janet Gray provided sketches for
the Oceans Education curriculum and Lynn Lee for other publications.
Artist Simon Davies has assisted with graphic design.
Communicopia Inc. created the site design from
initial work by Hannah Mae. Pano Skrivanos provides website support to
build and maintain the site. Base map bathymetry and elevation data for
the Marine Atlas are courtesy of Gowgaia
Institute.
Marine Matters work on Haida
Gwaii is largely funded by WWF-Canada.
Project-specific funding has been received from Gwaii Trust, Fisheries
and Oceans Canada and Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida
Heritage Site. The Marine Matters website is
funded by WWF-Canada.
